Are We Still Mad At The Dixie Chicks?

English: Natalie Maines and Emily Robison of t...

Image via Wikipedia

The Dixie Chicks are a band made up of three women, Natalie Maines (lead singer), and sisters Emily and Martie Erwin. The band initially started back in 1989 with a different lead singer but became a household name in the late 90’s with Natalie as the lead. The Dixie Chicks were extremely popular at their peak earning 10 CMA awards and an astonishing 13 Grammy’s. Some of their most popular songs were “Cowboy Take Me Away“, “Landslide”, and “Without You”.

The Dixie Chicks fame began to take a turn in 2003, when they were touring in London at the time the U.S. called for war against Iraq. On stage, Natalie Maines, told their english fans that they were on the “good” side with them and added that they were ashamed the President of the United States (George W.Bush) was from Texas. Natalie’s statement immediately hit the newsstands and patriotic Country music fans took notice. Toby Keith had a poster made of Natalie Maines with Sadam Hussein and hung it behind him on stage during his tour “Shockin’ Yall” (according to wikipedia).

Toby Keith and the Dixie Chicks declared a political war. At the Academy of Country Music awards, the Chicks fired back at Toby Keith. Natalie performed in a white T-shirt that said F.U.T.K. Although it was later confirmed the shirt stood for F.U. Toby Keith, The Chicks claimed it stood for “Freedom, United, Together in Kindness”.

During the war between Toby Keith and The Dixie Chicks, radio stations took sides and began to boycott The Dixie Chicks all-together. Americans were in a very emotional state after September 11th and Country music fans are traditionally both conservative and patriotic. One of The Dixie Chicks final songs was called “Not Ready To Make Nice“. The song spoke volumes and was even performed at the Grammy’s.

Lyrics to Not Ready To Make Nice
I’ve paid a price and I’ll keep paying, I’m not ready to make nice I’m not ready to back down, I’m mad as hell and I don’t have time to go round and round and round. It’s too late to make it right, I probably wouldn’t if I could cause I’m mad as hell and I can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should…I made my bed and I sleep like a baby with no regrets and no I don’t mind sayin, It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger, and how in the world can the words I said send somebody so over the edge that they’d write me a letter sayin that I better shut up and sing or my life will be over…

It’s been 9 years since The Dixie Chicks made their initial statement about being ashamed of the President but no forgiveness has been offered. The Dixie Chicks traded their fame and success for their personal and political beliefs. They stuck to their word and never backed down or apologized, but neither did we.

After four years without work, sisters Emily and Martie started their own duo called Court Yard Hounds. They offer a folksy more mellow country sound. To listen to their music check out vevo, youtube or itunes.

Jessie James, The New American Outlaw

Jessie James (album)

Image via Wikipedia

Jessie James (aka Jessica Rose James) is a rising Country star, but not the cookie cutter kind. she was born in Italy and raised in Georgia. She maximizes sex appeal and sometimes abandons stringed instruments all together. So what makes Jessie James country? She makes Jessie James country.

Like many Country singers, Jessie knew from a young age that she wanted to sing. She tried (unsuccessfully) to snag a nashville record deal. Soon she was introduced to YellowDog Records, an independent record company, and began her career as a singer. She was eventually signed to Mercury Records who portrayed her as more of a pop singer. Her album sent off a confusing message with both pop and rock songs, appealing only to a few. Stedfast, Jessie talked her way back to country. With a spruced up image her songs are more crossover and less one song country and one song pop.

Jessie recently released her newest single ‘When You Say My Name‘. She also performed at the halftime show for the Broncos v. Steelers playoff game. She may have been an outlaw and outcast, but that same spirit gave her a second chance.

You can hear Jessie’s music at iTunes or Amazon. Learn more about the gorgeous Jessie James at http://www.thisisjessiejames.com.

Kenny Chesney: Back On Top

, during a performance in Jacksonville, Florida

Image via Wikipedia

Kenny Chesney is the man that brought us soulful country songs like ‘Me AndYou’ and ‘You Had Me At Hello’. He’s always quick to mention his home in Tennessee in both interviews and Music. He uses real life experiences and writes about his favorite things- women and football. His honesty and ownership of lyrics makes his music relatable to his fans.

A few years ago, Kenny took an unexpected turn. He began writing songs and making videos about his second home in St.John. This became the starting point of a new kind of music called ‘Caribbean Country’. Caribbean Country quickly took off and at least a dozen other artist began to add beachy rhythms to their lyrics.

Year after year, Kenny racked up on awards like ‘Entertainer of the Year’ and ‘Album of the Year’. He was at the top of Country Music for several years, until the massive rush of new artist came.

In a recent television interview with CMT, Chesney admitted being worn out and worn down with music. He said he took a break away from music completely and was able to come up with the new hit single ‘You and Tequilla’.

‘You and Tequilla’ went straight to the top. Kenny is nominated for 9 ACM awards including ‘Entertainer of the Year’ and ‘Vocal Event of the Year’. Last year, Kenny also produced and co-directed a film called ‘The Boys of Fall‘ for ESPN .

He will start a new tour called ‘Brothers of the Sun’ (with Tim McGraw )this Summer. It looks like Kenny Chesney is back on top.

For more information about Kenny Chesney visit http://www.kennychesney.com or download and listen to his music on iTunes.  You can also see him on April 1st at 8:00pm est for the ACM awards.

Billboard’s Most Anticipated Albums In Country: Brent Anderson

Brent Anderson

Brent Anderson was recently listed as one of only two, most anticipated country albums of the year. If you haven’t heard of Brent, he just released his new single called ‘Amy’s Song’. Brent is a 23-year-old singer and guitarist from Pascagoula , Mississippi and some would argue he’s the son of the best parents in the world. Brent realized his love for music when he was only 7 years old. Luckily, Brent’s grandfather had a quartet and Brent was able to join. At the age of 10 he began to write songs, and at 13 he fronted his own band.

Brent’s band got a lot of gigs and that meant staying out until 2:00 or 2:30 3-4 times a week. His dad would sometimes get only 3 or 4 hours of sleep before going to his full-time job. Brent’s mother left her job as a teacher so Brent could sleep in after staying out late playing.

In 2005, just two weeks before hurricane Katrina, Brent’s family moved him to Nashville to pursue his dream professionally. Brent’s talent and his families steadfast belief and sacrifice in him have paid off. Look for Brent Anderson’s most anticipated album, the date is still pending but it’ll be well worth the wait.

Folsom Prison Blues Revival

Jamie Lono: Photo Credit- The Voice

Last night, Jamie Lono, a sandwich maker from Chicago, became a star on The Voice. His rendition of Johnny Cash’s hit Folsom Prison Blues left viewers with their mouths open. Today, Jamie’s song debuted on iTunes and is already at #49. He soared past all other contestants and even huge stars like Taylor Swift.

The next hot spot on the iTunes chart belongs to Mathai. Last night she performed “Rumour Has It” by Adele. Everyone was amazed by Mathai’s very unique sound and she was quickly snatched up by Team Adam. Her song is at #98.
